A Meal Takes Effort – Lord’s Supper Meditation

The preparation of a meal requires effort.

In this case, the bread had to be bought, carried to church, cut up and prepared. The wine likewise had to be purchased, delivered, and poured into the cups. The cups needed to be purchased and unpacked.

But the feast that this meal points us to required even greater preparation than that.

The flesh of Christ sacrificed for you and His blood poured out for you required great effort and planning.

God ensured that Pilate was raised as a little boy, fed well, educated as he needed to be and connected to all the right people to ensure he would get into the position of governor where he would have the power to command the crucifixion of Christ.

God sustained Judas throughout his plotting and planning. God kept Judas’ greed a secret, giving him over to its sway to the point that he would betray the Lord of glory for 30 pieces of silver.

God germinated the seeds that would grow into the tree that would be made into the cross that Christ would be nailed to.

Before the dawn of time, God the Father and God the Son agreed to save a people through the incarnation, life, death and resurrection of Jesus, the Son of God. He then worked over thousands of years to achieve that plan.

When we put in effort to feed people with life giving food, we usually know the people we are serving and we usually like them.

The astonishing thing about the meal before you is that it was prepared for you by God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit when you hated him and wanted nothing to do with him.

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Romans 5:8

Christ’s body was broken for you before you knew him. Christ’s blood was poured out before you could sing his praise. Christ died for you before you knew you needed saving.

This meal is a reminder of that sacrifice, prepared with great effort before you knew you needed it.

But although this meal was prepared before you knew you needed it, it is not for you to participate in before you have fed on the true sacrifice. This meal is for those who have seen their need of Christ’s sacrifice, who have repented and believed in Him.

If you have already come to Christ, then come and welcome to this meal, prepared for you while you were still Christ’s enemy.
