The existence of God is assumed from the very beginning of the Bible. This makes sense when you realise that the Bible is God’s word to us. Whenever I start speaking to someone, oddly enough I never feel compelled to prove my own existence.
It is valid and important, in fact it is critical, for us to confess what we believe. Without knowing a level of detail about what we believe the Bible is about, what we believe the gospel is, who we believe God is and more, there is no Christianity. That is why the Apostles Creed starts with these words “we believe”.
Throughout all of church history since, the Apostles Creed has been widely accepted as – in the words of John Calvin – “a full and every way complete summary of faith, containing nothing but what has been derived from the infallible word of God”.
